Surely living with the mindset of the Spirit will make you a spiritual person, right? Well the answer is yes and, what’s more, through the Scriptures we can actually get some clarity on what that might look like. We’ve already seen a lot of the “heart” of the Spiritual Mindset but there is much more. One thing that the Spiritual Mindset needs to do is to get life into the right perspective in relation to God’s management of history:
Col. 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
The life of each of God’s children has been caught up in the life and work of the Lord Jesus, the one for whom all things exist and the one in whom all things hold together. There is, of course, a very real sense in which Jesus is not here, he has ascended to the right hand of God – as Peter announced at Pentecost:
Acts 2:32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
The significance of this for Christians lay in the fact that the perfection of the Lord Jesus, and our participation in this perfection in relation to the Father, lies in our future. Our lives, as Paul says in 3:3 are now hidden with Christ in God. However it is that the resurrected Lord Jesus dwells in eternity with God, the promise that comes to us through the gospel is that Jesus is there for us – in him we live with God in a perfect way BUT the revelation and consummation of this in our earthly experience awaits the revelation of Jesus. As Paul writes in 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
So the perfected sense of our holiness and blamelessness that Christ Jesus has achieved for us is kept in trust until we are of age – if you like. Like when a person puts aside a large amount of money for a child, it is held in trust awaiting the appropriate time.
